In an effort to combat hunger and bring attention to a growing epidemic in our home city of San Antonio, OBGR held a food drive during the month of November.
In addition to collecting food and some monetary donations, we also had food themed days for two weeks which prompted an outpouring of giving amongst the staff. During those days, individuals were encouraged to bring specific items that the San Antonio Food Bank has listed on their 12 Most Wanted list. A few of the themed days included Macaroni Monday, Tuna Tuesday and We Like Rice Wednesday.
We kept track of food donations by adding up the weights on the labels, reaching our collection goal of 500 pounds. At the “official weigh-in” at the Food Bank we were thrilled to discover our grand total collected was 595 pounds of much needed food for our community. In addition, we collected $110 in cash donations – the buying power of the San Antonio Food bank is roughly 10 pounds of food/per dollar so our cash will help 10 fold!
The San Antonio Food Bank serves 16 counties in Texas with 36% of those served being children. They are able to put 98% of donations directly into their food distribution programs and are funded by local businesses, churches, foundations, corporations, and of course a generous community.
Realizing how fortunate we are as OneBeacon employees, it was an honor to do our small part to help feed our hungry neighbors.
