The OneBeacon Government Risks (OBGR) office in San Antonio held a month long fundraising event in October for Breast Cancer Awareness. The benefactor of the event was a local favorite – WINGS (Women Involved in Nurturing, Giving and Sharing)! In addition to “pinking out” OBGR’s office with pink treats, drinks and clothing, we raised additional funds by providing “Thursday Jeans Days” in which employees could purchase the option to dress down.
Our office has been touched by breast cancer so with the help of generous employees and a very generous donation from the OneBeacon Charitable Trust, we were thrilled to present WINGS a check for $1,500! We were honored and humbled to host a visit from WINGS recently including Kim Hinze, executive director, Deirdre Poole, events, fundraisers and volunteers, Lisa Kerkez, survivor, spokesperson and current recipient of WINGS assistance, and Leslie Mouton, WINGS president, survivor and local KSAT12 news anchor.
Lisa took us on an emotional walk through her diagnosis and subsequent valiant battle with breast cancer. Several years ago, after being let go from her job and facing the potential loss of her much needed health insurance, Lisa made contact with WINGS who in turn was able to pay her COBRA payments so she could continue with her same care, same doctors and same treatments. Lisa recently celebrated two years cancer-free and is forever grateful to WINGS for helping her keep her health insurance uninterrupted. Donations like ours directly help those most in need.
WINGS is designed to fill the gap that exists between breast cancer detection and treatment. For many Central and South Texas uninsured women, WINGS is their only option for what is hoped to be life-saving care and treatment. WINGS utilizes a network of physicians and treatment centers to give these women a real chance at fighting this deadly disease. Beyond treatment, WINGS works in concert with organizations dedicated to education and outreach.
